Tragic Passing....This morning, my friend and former band mate, passed away today due to a fire in his apartment in downtown Cleveland. I just found out about an hour and a half ago and I'm quite numb. None of us have really talked to him since he left the band 1 year ago this upcoming saturday.
I don't know what to say or do because he was a great guy. Got on my nerves and did some weird ass shit, but was always a great friend. Quote: Cleveland, OH - Fire broke out at the 19 Action News Reserve Square building shortly after 6AM Tuesday morning. The fire was confined to an apartment on the 13th floor where one person was living. Firefighters rescued the man and performed CPR before rushing him to a local hospital. Brett McDavid died at St. Vincent Charity Hospital. The coroner says the 27-year-old died from smoke inhalation. 19 Action News has learned McDavid worked as a bartender at Scorchers - a bar restaurant inside Reserve Square. Firefighters say the fire appears to have been caused by food left unattended on his stove. 19 Action News Studios are located in the basement. Categories: Elsewhere
iTunes Authorization DirectoryCan any of you tell me the exact name and location of the iTunes authorization directory? I was clearing a bunch of crap out from my HD this morning (from old betas and stuff) and I accidentally deleted a folder that iTunes uses to authorize the playback of purchased music. It says to "fix the permissions" for the missing folder but of course, it's not there anymore. Please help me to remake the mighty iTunes Authorization folder. Pretty sure it's in the main Library directory but not 100% positive.
Oh yah: if there's a specific XML file in there or something, tips on how to regenerate that would be a help, but I think iTunes should do so by itself once it finds the folder? Categories: Elsewhere

iPhone or iPod Touch for application development? This weekend I'm going to buy either an iPhone or an iPod Touch to begin my iPhone/iPod Touch application development. I've been trying to decide which device to buy (iPhone or iPod Touch).
Here's what I'm choosing between... 16GB iPhone 3G from Apple or AT&T store: $299 (plus tax) plus $69/month (plus taxes) for two years. 16GB iPod Touch from Amazon.com: $389 (no tax) 32GB iPod Touch from Amazon.com: $474.95 (no tax) I'm leaning towards 16GB iPhone right now. The only reason I would go for the iPhone over the Touch is to make certain I'm getting the "full experience" while developing. An iPod Touch definitely only has a subset of the features of an iPhone. I'm interested in other people's thoughts on this. I can't think of anything the iPhone can do that the Touch can't that I will require for my application, but... well, you never know, right? I don't need this device for anything other than application development. Of course, if I had an iPhone, I would use it as my cell phone so that I wouldn't have to have another separate cell phone, but I'm not thinking, "Hey, I need a cell phone anyway - might as well get the iPhone instead of the Touch." iPod Touch and VPNs?I've set up a PPTP server on my Linksys router courtesy of the OpenWRT firmware so I can connect securely from open Wifi hotspots and it works great when I'm on my MBP, but I've never gotten my iPod Touch to work. Not on any version from 1.1.4 to 2.0.2. I can connect to the VPN just fine and access computers on my network, but I can't connect to anything outside. I've tried both domain names and IP addresses of various sites, and both times I just get an error from Mobile Safari saying my iPod isn't connected to the Internet.
It sounds like a routing problem in the configuration of the PPTP server but the exact same configuration on my computer works. I've tested them side-by-side at a Starbucks. Googling turns up numerous accounts of trouble with the iPhone OS VPN client, but no one seems to have a solution. Any ideas? Categories: Elsewhere
IMAP and MAIL.app Import helpokay, so I am transferring servers, I took all my emails and IMAP'ed it to a MAIL.app, and then took the folder from library/mail/IMAP-email@address.com... so I took that folder and copied and pasted to desktop, and an external. Now I switched servers and now want to back into mail, BUT just dragging the folder and opening mail up, and the email I "backed up" is not showing up. I did a lot of things and went back into the original server and re-did my steps and somehow deleted about 400 of the emails. and so the only copies I have now are in that folder on the desktop.
thanks for your help! Categories: Elsewhere
Paypal not allowing credit card paymentsI'm not sure if anyone else has encountered this yet, but my wife bought a phone on eBay, went to pay for it with her CC, and they put it through as a echeck. She called them to find out why they did it, and after about 10 minutes of evading the question, the person admitted that Paypal has been getting a huge number of credit card frauds, and has been denying credit card transactions until they can fix the problem.
I'm not sure if this is the case for everyone (I know I just used my CC for an eBay a few weeks ago), but that's the story she was given. Just a heads up, and I'm a bit curious to see if anyone else has been having an issue with this. Categories: Elsewhere

Looking for a good HDTV antennaI'd like to equip some of the secondary TV's in my home to receive digital broadcasts over the air, so I am looking for a decent HDTV antenna.
I live about 10 miles outside Washington DC, so should have no trouble pulling in most of the local broadcasts. However, I'd also like to be able to get a few of the Baltimore stations, which are about 45 miles away (mainly so I can watch football other than the Redskins on Sundays). For this, I think I need a medium strength directional antenna, which I would like to mount in my attic. I'd about settled on the Channel Master 4221, which is UHF only. No problem, just about all current HD broadcasts are in the UHF band, right? Then I went tvfool.com, and discovered that post-transition, a good number of the local stations will be dropping their digital transmissions back down into the VHF-Hi band. Does this mean I should really be shopping for a VHF/UHF antenna? If so, can anybody recommend one smaller than a 747 that will fit my needs? I'm surprised that there don't seem to be many compact UHF/VHF-Hi antennas on the market. Thanks! Categories: Elsewhere

New router, big issues.Every three minutes I get this message, "The wireless network appears to have been compromised and will be disabled for about a minute."
I just installed a wrt610n router and have no idea why this message keeps popping up. Is there anyway just to disable it? It doesn't seem to be serving any purpose whatsoever. Categories: Elsewhere
The meaning of "omnomnom"This is for the ones who have absolutely nothing else on their minds!
The name of the late Snake clone for iPhone, "Omnomnom", got me wondering and googling. I stumbled upon the following webpage, which made me realize that I'm one hell of an over-aged internetter: http://forums.narutofan.com/archive/...41775-p-9.html Nevertheless, searching for the word "omnomnom" on this page, I found some lines suggesting that it has something to do with eating, and now I'm realizing that "omnomnom", if pronounciated in English, is precisely what I say when I offer a spoon of porridge to my 10 month old son! The same my mother said to me, and so did my grandmother to her! Now it appears that a little retro LCD snake is saying the word when eating little black squares. Is "omnomnom" indeed an english expression a la "yummy"? Is it Japanese? Any other theories? Categories: Elsewhere
A wonderful Apple Store experience.Hello everyone. I mainly read these forums, but I have a little story to share. I got a MacBook for Christmas. It was going to be my Christmas and Graduation gift combined. The MacBook was the 2.2GHz white model (middle config) with a SuperDrive, 120GB HD and 1GB of RAM. I love the laptop but I noticed one problem since the moment I took it out of the box. The screen colors were way washed out. I knew this because I had an iMac G5 (iSight) (2005, before Intel switch). My parents now use the iMac since I have the MacBook. Anyway, I knew the colors were really washed out because the blue website progress bar in Safari was more like a very faint blue/green instead of the normal blue. Also Gmail and Google Reader looked way off. I reformatted the MacBook Christmas day thinking that would fix the problem. Nope, same problem. I have all the updates installed through 10.5.4. I have used the built in calibration utility in System Preferences and SuperCal. I have gotten some decent results but not exactly what I want. I have also downloaded many color profiles for MacBooks I found. Some of them look correct but they make the screen brightness very dark even when it is all the way up.
I made a genius bar appointment for Friday, August 15, 2008. The genius said he can't deal with the screen problem and that it would have to be shipped off to Apple. My warranty is effective through Dec. 14, 2008. Well I am leaving for college in a few days so I really cannot send my laptop off right now. Also I upgraded my hard disk to a 250GB a few weeks ago. The genius said I would have to put the original Apple drive back in or else Apple would not fix the machine. I know this was my fault for not taking care of this problem at the beginning of the summer. So I just went back outside into the mall. After about 15 minutes I went back into the Apple store to use one of their computers to look up some addresses of some other Mac specialists. I just wanted to have my screen calibrated but I didn't want to spend money on a device I'd use one time. While I was still looking for these places a woman who works there asked me if I needed help. I explained my problem and she brought out the lead genius of the Oak Brook Apple store. I told him my situation. We compared the Gmail website from my MacBook to one of the store models. He noticed right away that the screen was very faded. He went in the back room with my laptop and returned a few minutes later. I asked him if I was going to have to send it off to Apple to have it fixed because I am leaving for college next Wednesday. He said that he wanted to try and avoid this problem. He said he was willing to exchange my machine for a brand new one. He asked me when the last time I did a backup and I said I ran Time Machine a few days ago but I did a lot since then. I should have backed up prior to going to the Apple store but I didn't. He said that he would swap out my hard disk (the non-Apple 250GB drive) and my 4GB of RAM and put them in the new MacBook for free. He came back in about 15 or 20 minutes with the new computer. To my surprise he upgraded me to the 2.4GHz model instead of a replacement of my 2.2GHz macine. Everything was exactly as I had it on my machine. The build quality seemed a bit better on the new MacBook also. Since it was an exchange and not a repair of my computer I now have a new warranty effective through next August. Finally and most importantly, the screen color issue is gone and everything looks the way it should. The screen is also much brighter than my machine. He gave me his business card I said thank you so much and I went home. I called the Apple store a few hours later to ask for the lead genius. I just wanted to tell him thanks so much for what he did and that he helped me out a lot. He said your welcome and wished me luck at college. At first I thought my Apple store experience was going to be sour but then it turned out to be wonderful. This is why I love Apple and their support. I just thought I'd share my experience with all of you. Categories: Elsewhere
Facebook = Sex ??What exactly is the appeal of Facebook? I mean psychologically. Why is it that people repeatedly update the site, just to see what new things their friends have written? I've felt the attraction myself, but when I back up and look at it sideways it just smells like a great big old time-sink.
Am I correct in my assumption that it's all about sex and the possibility of sex? Seriously, I'm banking on sex. Categories: Elsewhere
iPhone - has AT&T changed its voicemail handling?I've been an AT&T customer since late last June. (I switched from Verizon right before getting my iPhone.) From July 2007 until sometime in June, voicemails had a strict 30-day lifespan, and would disappear from my iPhone's visual voicemail on the 31st day like clockwork (if I hadn't deleted them by then).
Today, I was scrolling thru some saved voicemails when I noticed I still had voicemails from late June stored in my visual voicemail. I also noticed I had 31 voicemails on my iPhone, which, I thought (?), was impossible given the prior 30-message limit. Has AT&T revamped their voicemail handling and policies, or did I experience some sort of glitch? Not only did I have messages that are almost 60 days old on my iPhone, I had also exceeded AT&T's stated limit. Thanks for all feedback. Categories: Elsewhere
